About NJAA Baseball and SoftballWith great traditions of success behind them, baseball and softball are going strong at NJAA! Many of our current coaches played for NJAA as kids, and they are dedicated to passing along the love and respect for the sports they were taught in their youth. The regular season begins in mid-April and runs for 6 weeks (games typically Mon-Thurs), followed by a great postseason tournament between the area associations. All Star teams are picked at the season’s end, and they compete in area tournaments during the summer. In addition, some NJAA players opt to play travel ball on weekends, giving them opportunities to further build their baseball or softball skills. 5-6 Co-Ed Baseball The 5-6 age group for boys and girls focuses on development of the fundamental skills kids need for future seasons, while having plenty of fun. The games are coach pitched, and defensive plays can be made back to the adult pitcher, as well as in any ordinary baseball fashion. We believe in keeping score, so the young players can learn to win and lose the right way. Snacks follow each game, of course! 7-8 Girls Softball The 7-8 girls age group is coach pitched, but otherwise very close to real softball. The girls play with 11” standard softballs and 60 ft base paths, giving them an opportunity to develop solid softball skills in a fun, competitive environment. 7-8 Boys Baseball In 7-8 boys baseball, the skills learned in 5-6 CoEd are built on, bringing the game closer to real baseball. The games are machine pitched, providing the players a consistently good pitch thrown at their hitting level. This allows the players to develop the nice level swing characteristic of good hitters. Defensively, the games are very close to real baseball, except with 10 players on the field and no base stealing. This is a very fun, competitive age group at NJAA. 9-10 Girls Softball Now the players do the pitching. In 9-10 Softball, fast pitch softball skills are developed, and the girls are now allowed to steal. The result is a season of exciting games. 9-10 Boys Baseball For the boys who honed their baseball skills in 7-8, this age group is waiting. Games are player pitched, and base stealing is allowed once the ball leaves the pitcher’s hand. The kids who play 9-10 baseball at NJAA take big steps in their development as players. 11-13 Boys Baseball 70 foot basepaths, and players can lead off and steal. Simply put, 11-13 baseball at NJAA is the real deal!
